The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has recently rolled out an interesting new initiative - the FASTag Annual Pass, starting at just ₹3,000. Effective August 15, 2025, this plan aims to make highway travel smoother, quicker, and more predictable for private vehicle owners across India.

Aims

  • To reduce cash transactions at toll booths

  • Cut down long queues

  • Offer frequent highway users a cost-effective, hassle-free alternative to paying tolls trip by trip

Features

  • From August 15, 2025, private vehicles can opt for a ₹3,000 annual FASTag pass, valid on National Highways (NH) and National Expressways (NE) only.

  • It would cover 200 toll-point crossings or 12 months, whichever occurs first.

  • It is not mandatory to get an annual pass, but it has been designed to ease cashless travel and reduce toll-booth congestion.

How do you get a FASTag Annual Pass Online?

Below are the basic steps you need to follow to get your FASTag annual pass. You can revisit this blog for further updates that might take place after 15th August 2025.

Step 1: Download the official Rajmarg Yatra App

Download the official mobile app, Rajmarg Yatra app launched by the Government of India.

OR

Visit the official website of NHAI.

OR

Go to the MoRTH FASTag web portal.

Step 2: Log in and Check for Eligibility

Once you have downloaded the app, log in using your credentials. To proceed with the annual pass, your vehicle’s eligibility and whether it is linked with FASTag will be verified.

Step 3: Pay The Annual Pass Fees

Once approved, you will be redirected to the payment screen where you must pay the annual pass fees of INR 3,000.00. The fees you pay will be for the FYI 2025-26.

Step 4: Receive The Confirmation

The SMS alerts will notify you of the activation and progressively count your trips.

3 Things You Must Know About Your FASTag Annual Pass

  1. Open Toll Plazas: Every crossing counts as one (so return = two trips).

  2. Closed-Loop Systems: One full entry‑exit is counted as a single trip.

  3. Limit Hard-Stop: after 200 trips or 1 year, FASTag reverts to standard per-trip toll mode. But you can re-enrol for your convenience.

Who Should Get the FASTag Annual Pass?

  • Frequent highway users: You are likely to save up to 70% on toll costs, and the average toll per trip could drop to ~₹15 from ₹50+.

  • Daily Commuters: Daily commuters crossing multiple tolls, or those who frequently pass through highway plazas within 60 km zones.

If you do fewer than ~60 one-way tolls a year, making conventional payments might be more cost-effective than ₹3,000 upfront.

Benefits & Potential Drawbacks

Pros

  • Cost-efficiency for regular users (save ₹7,000+ annually).

  • Convenient travel with less waiting, fewer transactions, and one pass for a year.

    • Boost to cashless mobility, potentially reducing queues and lowering the carbon emission rate at toll booths.

Cons

  • This annual pass is non-transferable. It means it will be tied to one vehicle you must get the pass for.

  • Only valid on NHAI-managed highways. Tolls on state roads or airports are still charged separately.

  • Frequent travellers beyond the 200-trip mark will pay per trip after expiry.
