Imagine your birthday is a few days away and you have nothing special to wear. You have been looking for a perfect outfit for the last 2 days. After so much scrolling across all pages, you have finally found the perfect fit and have ordered it. But the delivery date is exact on your birthday. You are excited to receive your outfit on your special day and want to flaunt it all day. You’ve already received multiple updates confirming that your parcel will be delivered soon, but due to a confusing home address, the delivery partner was unable to complete the delivery on the scheduled day.

That one missed delivery turned your excitement into disappointment. And let’s be honest, this isn't the first time it's happened. From wrong turns to endless calls and unclear addresses, this always created chaos not just for you, but for every person trying to reach your doorstep. If there were a simpler and smarter way to get the addresses right all the time, we could imagine how easier life would be.

This is exactly where DIGIPIN steps in.

DIGIPIN is a smart, shareable pin based on your location for your address that helps find the right places within the right timeframe. No more explaining landmarks or cross streets, you just need to share one unique code that gets your delivery, service, or guest to the right spot.

Today’s blog will give a clear understanding of DIGIPIN and how you can create one for your address. Read till the end!

What is DIGIPIN?

DIGIPIN is a short form of Digital Pincode. A unique, verifiable, and digital identity assigned to your physical address. It aims to provide a standardized, geo-coded addressing system for India, assigning a unique 10-character alphanumeric code. DIGIPIN was launched in India on May 27, 2025, by the Department of Posts in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of ISRO. The primary objective of DIGIPIN is to establish a Digital Address Infrastructure (DAI) for every household and commercial entity.

Why Do You Need DIGIPIN?

A DIGIPIN is needed to address the limitations of the traditional postal PIN code system, particularly in areas with unstructured or changing addresses. It provides a more precise and efficient way to locate places, benefiting various sectors like e-commerce, emergency services, and logistics.

For example:

  • One address might be written in multiple formats.

  • Local landmarks are often vague or missing.

  • Deliveries can be delayed due to confusing locations.

DIGIPIN promises:

  • One standardised format across the country

  • Improved delivery and navigation accuracy

  • Faster KYC and onboarding for financial services

  • Fraud prevention by linking services to verified addresses

  • Easy use across sectors like banking, insurance, healthcare, e-commerce, and government services

Benefits of DIGIPIN

  1. Eliminates the need to upload physical address documents.

  2. Enables fast, secure, and tamper-proof digital address verification.

  3. Helps people in informal or unregistered areas prove their address.

  4. Offers privacy by using location consent instead of personal documents.

  5. Speeds up KYC, onboarding, and deliveries for services.

  6. Supported by India’s digital public infrastructure for long-term use.
